SS16 – The top 5 trends you’ll want to wear
Is it just us, or does the first hint of British springtime make you feel like throwing off your winter coat, clearing out that wardrobe and filling it with a rainbow of new retro treasures? Well you’re in luck – Spring 2016 is finally go and it’s time to think about what we’re wearing.
Unsurprisingly, we’re not really ones for following fashion (vintage is forever darling), but we do like to tip our toe into the trends every once in a while. After scouring blogs, magazines and trend reports, here are the five key looks you can expect to be coveting over the coming months.
Global Technicolour
If an exotic holiday is looking like something of a pipe dream, the global trend should bring a little sunshine into your life. This is all about warm colours and print – opt for bold flowers, palm leaves, pom poms and heavy embellishment to avoid dipping into the distasteful realm of cultural appropriation. If in doubt, check out the style of Solange Knowles, Vogue stylist Julia Sarr-Jamois or our very own bookings and flea manager Donna (pictured below!)!
Souvenir Jackets
Satin jackets, bomber jackets, varsity jackets…no matter what you call them, this is the one style of outerwear that will reign supreme in SS16. Ranging from embroidered sports teams to graphic patterns and everything in between, their versatility makes them a great investment piece. Wear yours over a 50s frock for a girly prom look, or keep it casual with trainers and cuffed jeans. Kilo Manager Jenessa found this great red number at a London Kilo Sale – due to the super light fabric, it clocked in at a crazy-cheap £6!
Ruffles
Seen on the high fashion catwalks of Chanel and marc Jacobs to name but a few, romantic frills are everywhere – bonus points if they’re in a pretty pastel. To go all out, opt for a off-shoulder fit with ruffles all around – channel your inner Carmen Miranda! If you’re fearful of looking a little too downtown abbey, a rouched high collar or a peplum skirt should fit the bill. Fancy getting crafty? We love Hannah from Paloma In Disguise’s frilly DIY – http://www.palomaindisguise.com/2016/02/an-oxfam-spring-upcycle.html
Graphic Prints
Forget your usual pinstripe or a nautical number – this season stripes take centre stage. The more lurid the better – combine yours with checked or spotted separates for ultimate mind-bending pattern. We’ll be sporting ours in rainbows – try blending sunny yellowand candy pink together, or orange and purple – clashing is the aim of the game! Pinterest is absolutely bursting with inspiration – we found this great example on Elle Canada, using white as a spacer to create a great pop-art effect.
Contemporary 70s
Ever wished that you spent your childhood summers at an all-american summer camp? The contemporary 70s trend is for you. Think ringer tees, socks ‘n’ trainers, sporty shorts…the geekier the better for this hazy summer look. Worried you might be a little bit past the brownies and scouts phrase? Patch up a denim jacket or try out some kitschy accessories – we recommend a trip to our fair or flea for great novelty bags and baskets!

The Vintage Kilo Sale Refashion Challenge – The Winners Unveiled!
Happy February vintage lovers! It’s been a busy few months at Kilo HQ – and the eagled-eyed social media followers amongst you will know why.
At the end of 2015 we ran an exclusive competition with fashion students all over the country to design a new garment from upcycled kilo items, designed to raise awareness of how shopping independent and getting creative can save you a fortune on high street trends.
We were blown away by the effort put into our entries, with designs varying from the conservative-smart to the wacky-colourful. With £200 of sponsorship money and a year’s free entry to the kilo sale up for grabs, we shared the pictures on social media and had a big summit at kilo HQ to decide our winners. Drum roll please…
3rd Place: Auguste Greiciute, Edinburgh College of Arts
Auguste’s entry bagged third prize due to it’s elegant simplicity – this is a look anybody can nail with a needle & thread and a free afternoon.Turning our vibrant kilo blouse into a cute skirt, we think this would look ace with a bardot black top and some killer espadrilles. Congratulations Auguste!
2nd Place: Emilia Elizabeth Erland, Northumbria Uni
Turning a pink midi dress and silk scarf into this gorgeous jumpsuit, we were suitable impressed by the fashion-forward nature of Auguste’s entry. Depicting her finished product from all angles, we can imagine donning this Hareem number with plenty of bangles and some pretty sandals in time for festival season. Good work Emilia!
1st Place: James Reeves, Edinburgh College Of Arts
Our undisputed winner was Edinburgh’s James Reeves. It’s hard to believe that those trousers and matching-collared shirt were once a maxi dress – upcycling at it’s very best! With a strong finish and well-styled shoot, this ensemble is perfectly in keeping with the retro florals covering our catwalks. Having won both the prize money and a coveted position as our new upcycling expert, expect to see lots more of James’s work soon!

Vintage Street Style At The Kilo Sale
Forget Vogue and forget Stylecaster – this month we’ve been getting out kicks out of our customers. No, we’re not talking Valentine’s just yet – we’re talking street style. It goes without saying that our vintage shoppers know their onions, but we’ve been thoroughly enjoying how effortlessly you spruce up to pop along to our fairs, kilos and fleas. Mannequins are well and truly over – what better inspiration for your next vintage buy than seeing a great look on a real-life walking and talking fashionista?
At our Bristol and Bethnal kilos, we were joined by two lovely photographers (Tegan Woods and Jordan-Jennings O’Toole respectively), who papped till they could pap no more. With poses that would make Tyra proud, here are some of our faves. Looking for further inspo? Retro-inspired halloween costumes on a budget
Halloween is right round the corner! Whether you’re planning a huge party, a spooky movie marathon or a night trick-or-treating, their is one essential to be had – a great costume.
If, like us, you’ve left your outfit to the very last minute, do not despair! Skip the boring cat ears and vampire teeth and opt for one of our fun throwback looks – made up of pieces you can actually wear again!
Cher and Dion from Clueless
Fashion stalwarts of the 90s, Cher and Dion are a cringe-free option for any BFF duo. The rules are fairly simple – stick to pink and yellow, accessorize with headgear and add in as much tartan as humanly possible. Altogether now: “as if?!’.
Wednesday Adams
All black everything – this look couldn’t be simpler! The collar is essential; if you can’t find a suitable 60s dress, simply pop a dress shirt under a jumper dress – it will keep you toasty on that trick or treat round!
Rosie The Riveter
Feel like channeling some old school feminism this Halloween without breaking too far away from a 40s/50s wardrobe? Rosie The Riveter is the look for you. The headscarf, navy blouse and high-waist jeans (Freddies of Pinewood have some great options) can all be sourced easily, and some extra party glam added with traditional mid-century make-up.
Will and Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bell Air
Want to make use of a technicolour wardrobe? The Fresh Prince is the perfect opportunity to sport those neons. Whether you’re a Will or a Carlton, this look is super 90s and can be catered for easily with a quick rummage round our kilo sale!
Margo and Ritchie Tenenbaum
If you’d rather look classy than crude this Halloween, the Tenenbaum look i instantly recognisable while making good use of items you probably already have in your wardrobe (or can buy from our fair!). The devil is in the detail – the cute side parting, big sunglasses and head bandage are all simple additions to a daytime-acceptable outfit. Perfect for those in a rush to a party!
The Twins from The Shining
It wouldn’t be Halloween without at least one really creepy option, and it doesn’t get much scarier than the twins from classic horror film The Shining. Best achieved with a similar-looking pal, everything much match – and you can have a lot of fun getting the fake blood exactly right!
Looking for the finishing touches for your costume? Why not pop down to one of our events this weekend?
31st October KILO SALE – Lincoln Engine Shed, 11am-4pm

A Sartorial Summer – August vintage events coming near you!
Can you believe that this weekend, August will have arrived? Although the British Summertime has left something to be desired (soggy would be putting it politely), August brings a whole wealth of fun summery activities – festivals, family days out and of course, a good few vintage fairs! Here’s out guide to which august vintage events you can expect from us over the next few weekends.

The Vintage Kilo Sale hits both North and South this fortnight, bringing with it a ton of festival clobber to get you in the mood for the likes of Reading & Leeds, V Fest, Boardmasters, Wilderness and Creamfields. We’ll be stocking plenty more besides – in London we’ll be joined by Vintage Promise for all your jewellery needs, and in Glasgow we’ll have Dear Rose With Love onboard.
Expect plenty of upcycle-worthy stock as well as ready-to-wear pieces, ranging from dresses to denim, skirts to shorts and a few retro suprises…

All our scots friends are in for a treat next weekend! We’re taking over the OOTB Hall for two whole days of retro fun. Expect over 30 stalls packed with incredible vintage fashion, accessories and homewares, the perfect excuse to fill your wardrobes in time for a last minute August getaway or summer wedding.
Win Free Kilo Entry – FOR A YEAR! Our Summer Survey
We like to think that we’re doing a pretty good job over at Vintage Kilo HQ, but as we all know, complacency is never chic! During our quieter summer season, kilo events manager Jenessa has been beavering away on lots of new ideas and innovations for the next season of vintage kilo sales, but we need YOUR help – with an added little prize giving of course!
Put simply, we want to know what you love best about The Vintage Kilo Sale, and what you’d like to see improved. We’ve made it super easy for you to show us your thoughts – simply full in our survey here.
As an extra little incentive, everybody who fills in the survey (and remembers to enter their email address in the final box) will be entered into a prize draw to win FREE ENTRY for them and a friend for ONE FULL YEAR of kilo sales, plus one free kilo each at their first event of choice. Don’t say we’re not good to you!
For those not in the know, The Vintage Kilo Sale is the younger sister of Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair, with a fun rummage twist. Established in 2009, we stock clothing from the 1960-1990s on rails and in large tubs, but nothing is individually priced – instead, you simply grab the items you like, pop them in one of our purple bags and then are charged by weight – £15 per kilo, which normally equates to 3-5 items. Bargain eh? For all our event info and updates visit us on facebook here.
Leeds Loving!
The first vintage season of 2015 is drawing to a close (sob!), and what better place to round things off than in Leeds? Cultural hub of the north, home to the best Spice Girl (Mel B) and the place where it all started for us at Judy HQ, Leeds holds a very dear place in our hearts. With a packed social calendar that has included Tour De Yorkshire, Leeds Food Festival and many many more over the past few months, it seems this northern city is the place to be – all great reasons to soak up the atmosphere and come and shop vintage with us!
Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair – 6th June, Leeds Corn Exchange
Free Entry – 10am – 5pm
Within the gorgeous surrounds of the Corn Exchange – just look at that roof!- we’ll be bringing our best traders to you, selling everything from cocktail dressers to cocktail shakers, flowy 70s gowns to hipster handbags and everything in between. Spanning 1920s – 1990s clothing and accessories, it’s near-on impossible to leave without a bargain. Even better – it’s free entry! Join us here
