Judy’s Resolutions for a Vintage 2017

Well hello 2017! After celebrating another year of vintage with two weeks off, copious amount of Quality Street and all day Netflix binges, we are fully back in action for a new season. Armed with an array of new stationery (our favourite motivation), we’ve been busy planning and plotting for what we hope will be our best year yet!

While we can’t reveal all our special plans just yet, we do have a few resolutions we want to share with you…

More cities!
What better place to start than more dates? We’ve been listening carefully to all your suggestions and are pleased to have added several new cities to our roster – Reading, Durham, Southampton, Sheffield and plenty more to come across our three brands. Keep an eye out on our social media to see if we’re coming to your city, and always feel free to send us your suggestions.

Let’s get social 
Speaking of social, we want to bring the fun back to your Facebook feed. While we won’t be spamming you with the same dull memes and ‘tag a friend’ sessions, we will strive to share more of the things we love – think star buys from our events, upcycling inspiration and a few giggles to brighten your day.

Introducing Judy’s Affordable Vintage Digest Issue #9

Now on it’s 9th issue, the digest is your peep behind the scenes at all things vintage fair, kilo sale and furniture flea. This season, we’re focusing on some serious nesting – from our top kitsch christmas decor ideas to blogger inspiration, there’s plenty of reasons to stay home! We also do our fair share of recollecting – check out our gallery of street style from some of our best events, learn from charitable celebrities through history or dream of summer days past with our postcards from Festival Number 6.

For those looking forward to the festive season, we also do our very own run-down of the seasons best fashion trends – the perfect ticklist to take with you to our next event.

Something old, something borrowed…

At the kilo sale we get our fair share of outfit inspiration from our customers – whether it’s a colourful hairstyle, a beautiful dress or a customised jacket. That said, sometimes we get a customer who goes that little bit further…how about a wedding dress?

If you were at our Birmingham kilo a few weeks back, you might have spotted Emma Gormally, or should we say, Emma Hutchinson. Delving deep into our kilo tubs, we suspected that her gorgeous frock might be the stuff of a photoshoot day out. Little did we know that it was actually Emma’s wedding day! An avid fan of the Custard Factory and it’s markets, we managed to track down the lady herself to find out about her fabulous vintage day out.

What brought you to The Custard Factory?
We got married in The Old Library. When Ben proposed this was the place he envisioned it would take place. We visit The Custard Factory a lot and I used to rent out art studios there in the past so we have lots of memories and associations with the place. I come to many markets at The Custard Factory as secondhand shopping is one of my favourite things to do – I will definitely be coming back for the kilo sale!

It was a truely beautiful day surrounded by our nearest and dearest. Our 18 month old son Arlowe wouldn’t leave his dads arms throughout the entire ceremony which actually made it all the more special. Our amazing photographer took some incredible shots in the streets surrounding the venue using street art and smoke bombs as our back drop.We then danced into the night…..

Was your wedding influenced by vintage in any other way? Your dress was absolutely beautiful, did this theme carry through the rest of the day?
I love all things vintage and some of my favourite vintage pieces from home became part of the decoration. Upon entering The Old Library for the first time I absolutely loved it but everything was white so I knew a huge injection of colour was needed. I am an Art tutor at a Special Needs College so I made the majority of the decorations myself but I did buy some Mexican picado flags online to really provide that sense of celebration and colour. I also used embroidery hoops in an alternative way as wall decorations with streams of ribbons cascading down from them. We also had a touch of Mills and Boon incorporated into the table signs to honour the original use of the building. Name cards were old library cards I stamped guests names onto.

I loved my dress and was really going for a vintagy look and was very happy to find this dress on ASOS for a bargain price.

img_9309What tips would you give brides-to-be on planning their big vintage wedding day?
My biggest tip would be just to take a moment where it’s just the two of you at some part of the day to catch your breath and take it all in. A friend of ours did just that, took both our hands and whisked us into a quite room, sat us down and it was such a lovely few moments.The day goes so unbelievably fast!

As we draw towards the end of the year, we’re spending more and more cosy evenings inside, which is why we’re so excited to have started working on the 9th issue of our magazine. Ever wanted to get your vintage business, blog or project in front of the eyes of thousands? For those not in the know, the Digest is our official vintage magazine, allowing us to communicate ‘behind the scenes’ with our audience in the form of vintage style tips, interviews and of course, features from you, our wonderful traders. AW16 Student Wardrobe Essentials

Freshers week is nearly over and it’s time to buckle down to some serious study – in serious style of course! We know well just how fashion-conscious student life can be, and rightly so – this is your time to express yourself, have fun and of course, flex that student discount!

All of that said, our entire ethos is affordability and we do believe that a great wardrobe can be achieved on a budget for those willing to hold out for the right pieces. Whether you’re after an LBD or a more statement look, it’s so important to have an amazing out-out outfit that you feel great and confident in. A great party dress doesn’t have to be skintight and tiny – lots of vintage day dresses look fab when cinched in with a belt and paired with a statement shoe.

Time to pop some tags… The Vintage Kilo Sale is the UK’s original ‘by weight’ event, allowing thrifty shoppers to pick and mix stock from the 1960s-1990s – just like Woolworth’s Sweets! Charged at £15 per kilo, there is no minimum or maximum spend, with individual items weighing in as low as £1.

Patching Things Up – Tips For 2016’s Hottest Trend

Even the most casual fashion fans among us will know that this year, one trend has dominated all of fashion – the humble pin or patch. No longer the domain of cub scouts or your Nana’s darning needle, these cute little customisations are how the fashion set are personalising their look, showing some individuality and crucially offering a serious throwback to the ‘collector’ trends of the 80s/90s.

But how best to rock your own patched piece without looking more shabby than chic? Embellished jeans, dresses and bags can look great in the right hands, but for patching newbies, you can’t go far wrong with a classic jacket. Feeling inspired? Follow our top tips and you’ll be rocking this look in no time.

Start simple
First things first, you’ll need to select your patching garment. It’s best to opt for a plain, hardy fabric – think denim or a heavy cotton. A plain background is often best so as not to clash with your pins and patches. A quick trip to our kilo sale or vintage fair is the perfect place to source your garment – play your cards right and it’ll cost you less than £15!

Shop Independent
As us vintage fans will know all too well, there is an immense satisfaction for sporting a garment that nobody else owns. Patching a jacket is a great excuse to support independent businesses and avoid lower-quality high street imitations (see the current accusations against Zara for copying indie artists’s work.) Shop around on etsy or search the tracked tags on Instagram – or have a chat with our traders of course!

Quality not Quantity
It can be tempting to patch as you go or throw any old thing at your jacket in an attempt to ‘finish it’, but we think it’s definitely worth building up a solid collection of patches over time before you go to town. The best patch effect is achieved by good curation, so think carefully about the vibe you want to portray and be patient in your pursuit for the perfect piece. Remember that a jacket can be subject to a fair bit of wear, so always opt for patches and pins of good sturdy quality – you don’t want bits falling off!

Plan things out
Feel like you’ve nailed your collection? Perfect! Now you’re at the stage where planning is key. Pins are obviously easy as they can be moved around, but patches require a little more consideration – lay yours out in full on your jacket or tack them with needle and thread to ensure you’re happy before going the whole hog. Also, be sure to check the instructions for each patch – modern ones are often iron fixable, whereas vintage patches may be better off handsewn. if you do get things a little wrong, don’t worry – the patched look is meant to be a little messy and unkept for it’s true effect.

Vogue 100 Manchester: A Century Of Style

Well well well…it looks like summer has finally arrived! Like classic brits we’ve rejoiced at the sudden sunshine, but like the dodgy-tanline-phobics we truly are, we’ve also enjoyed spending our summer downtime indoors.

And where better to spend a lazy day than in the cool surrounds of a museum? We’ve been fans of the Manchester Art gallery for some time, but when we discovered that it was to be the new home of the Vogue exhibition, we hotfooted it across the pennines faster than you could say ‘couture darling!’

A celebration of the whopping 100 years of Vogue’s history, ‘A century of style’ is a must-see for both fashion and photography fans. Seeing those iconic images of supermodels from the ages in glorious technicolour really reinforces the power of both styling and advertising, as well as the changing demands of publishing.It’s all here in a succinct exhibition – the uptight, unobtainable 1940s of couture, the cheeky fun of the 90s Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss era, right up to our modern days obsession with ‘celebrity’ coverstars. We could have spent hours pouring over each image – not bad for a free exhibition!

With back issues laid out in glass cabinets, a trip to the Vogue 100 it’s the perfect opportunity to brush up on your fashion history. A true fashion bible of our times, we can barely believe it’s already 100 years old. Long live Vogue!
