Judy’s Resolutions for a Vintage 2017

Well hello 2017! After celebrating another year of vintage with two weeks off, copious amount of Quality Street and all day Netflix binges, we are fully back in action for a new season. Armed with an array of new stationery (our favourite motivation), we’ve been busy planning and plotting for what we hope will be our best year yet!

While we can’t reveal all our special plans just yet, we do have a few resolutions we want to share with you…

More cities!
What better place to start than more dates? We’ve been listening carefully to all your suggestions and are pleased to have added several new cities to our roster – Reading, Durham, Southampton, Sheffield and plenty more to come across our three brands. Keep an eye out on our social media to see if we’re coming to your city, and always feel free to send us your suggestions.

Let’s get social 
Speaking of social, we want to bring the fun back to your Facebook feed. While we won’t be spamming you with the same dull memes and ‘tag a friend’ sessions, we will strive to share more of the things we love – think star buys from our events, upcycling inspiration and a few giggles to brighten your day.

Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair
The big daddy, the OG…Judy’s Vintage Fair has been going strong for nearly 11 years – once you’re inside one of our fairs, you’ll understand why! Bringing together some of the countries best and most eclectic traders, expect anything and everything from the 1920s-80s – we’re talking menswear, womenswear, accessories and homely knick knacks. Topped off with a tea party, this is your perfect weekend time travel day out – no flux capacitor needed.

The Vintage Furniture Flea

Teak, Formica, Perspex…this is one for the retro homeware addicts. Sleek mid-century styles and kitsch designs live harmoniously together in our packed halls, sold at an absolute snip of online or high street boutiques. You go-to destination to get that ‘pinnable’ look you’ve been swooning over, it’s not just furniture either – there are home pieces galore to cater for even the smallest of budgets.

The Vintage Kilo Sale

Time to pop some tags… The Vintage Kilo Sale is the UK’s original ‘by weight’ event, allowing thrifty shoppers to pick and mix stock from the 1960s-1990s – just like Woolworth’s Sweets! Charged at £15 per kilo, there is no minimum or maximum spend, with individual items weighing in as low as £1.

Holler at all our vintage kilo fans – we hope you’re well and enjoying your summer so far. We’re having a pretty giddy one ourselves – think festivals, trips abroad and of course, a whole heap of prep for our next season!
We’re always keen to improve what we do in kiloland, and we figured what better way than to get our fans involved? We’re always bowled over by the amount of creative people we meet at our events and all the kind emails we received from loyal customers looking to join our happy team.
So here is your chance! This is an open call to all creatives who think they have something to offer to make our events even more exciting – essentially, we’re opening up some fab vintage jobs! We want to hear from you all – DJ’s to Designers, Caterers to Craft Stall Owners, Accessories Aficionados and Savvy Seamstresses. We want to recruit Embroiderers, Vloggers, Hair Braiders, Upcyclers, Stylists …and much more besides. We want the hip, the innovative, the trend-savvy and the colourful. Whether you’re a student looking for some casual work or a more experienced stallholder in search of a new business opportunity, this is your chance to be part of something amazing.

Judy’s On Tour! Vintage Shopping in Amsterdam and France

Team Vintage have been well and truly making use of the quieter summer season with not one but two trips to see our EU cousins this month. With Kilo Manager Jenessa opting for Amsterdam and Fair Manager Emily whizzing to France, we’ve been thoroughly enjoying our summer holidays.

Being the vintage obsessives we are, we can’t help but take a sneak peek at how our pals across the channel/north sea like to sell their retro. For Jenessa this meant checking out the kilo shops of Amsterdam. A wee bit on the pricier side that our own event (don’t say we’re not good to you!), she had great fun seeing how the other half live. Beautifully merchandised and staffed by a lovely team, it got us dreaming about the possibility of our very own bricks and mortar.

Screen Shot 2016-06-22 at 13.56.33Sorting through tons of clothing at the kilo but not quite finding the ‘one’, Jenessa then pottered on down to Episode Vintage, a more traditional ‘by price’ offering which proved to be a serious treasure trove of Sportswear. She snapped up a flawless Adidas Jacket, some stripy shorts and a perfect pair of 80s yellow jeans – all for just over 40 EUR! And of course it wouldn’t have been a trip to Amsterdam without a stop by Kitsch Kitchen – an emporium of all things twee, colourful and throwback-thursday-inducing, she’s been frantically adding pieces to her Pinterest board ever since. Want to read more about Jenessa’s trip? For our resident glamour queen Emily, only a summer sojourn to francais would do. Making great excuse of the world-famous Broncante market, her bespectacled eyes snapped up some bargains right away – a 70s fondue set for just 7 EUR, as well as these fabulous fruity finds – a pear terrarium and an apple-shaped basket. Yum!

The foody fun didn’t stop there – when in France, one simply must eat all the pastries, and our Em has been sampling (and making) some right corkers. We were dribbling back in the office over these macarons, eclairs and a towering strawberry and mint palova – here’s hoping she brings some back!

In that summer holiday mood? Why not stock up that suitcase with a trip to one of our summer events?

1 Girl, 7 Dresses – Hayley’s Guide to Kilo Shopping

7 Days of Vintage Kilo Sale OutfitsWe’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – we get no bigger thrill at Vintage and Kilo HQ than seeing what our lovely shoppers have picked up at our events. Whether it’s an impulse bargain, a memory of their childhood or simply a piece that fits like a glove, we just love shopping vicariously through you. Not to mention the fact that it stops our own wardrobes from overflowing!

This week in Kilo-land, we got a lovely little treat on instagram when a tag popped up from Glasgow-based blogger and freelance writer Hayley Angell. Describing herself as a “Banter-loving Aussie with a big voice and even bigger bum – freelance writer, vintage-nut, maker & wearer of fancy brooches”, we knew she was one of us instantly. Tagging us in a weeklong blog series, Hayley shared the 7 dresses she picked up from our last kilo sale, clocking in at just £37 for the lot (plus two more vintage pieces). Impressed by her thrifty abilities, we were desperate to hear more…

Hi Hayley! How did you first hear about the Vintage Kilo Sale?
I saw the Glasgow sale on Facebook which beautifully coincided with a light-bulb moment that my ample backside rather lends itself to vintage-style, full-circle skirts! I had only recently moved to the city, so when a pal suggested we go along together, I snapped her hand off. I’d follow you around the country if I could!

How would you describe your personal style in a sentence?
“Vintage reproductions of classic vintage styles.” I adore the glamour and femininity of the 40s and 50s but generally via reproductions from the 80s/90s/00s given my ample curves.

 What’s been your biggest buyers regret from the kilo?
A) Not buying more.  B) The infamous dress number 8. Who knew the 80s sailor-inspired polyester number with oversized white satin Chelsea collar and heavy seam right across the thighs wouldn’t work? I looked like Sailor Moon reimagined as a roast pork. But alas, it went back in the charity shop bag and I’ve probably since walked past someone wearing it with total dress envy!

And your favourite of the 7 dresses?
While Day 1 is pure me – casual, fun and wildly inappropriate for the Glasgow weather, I have to say Day 7. I put it on and feel like a movie star! Secretly, it’s 3 sizes too big, so I don’t button it down, I wear it as a wrap dress… it works!

Could you talk us through how you went about styling your dresses?
I’ve kept my styling pretty simple with vintage stud earrings, waist belt (my wardrobe staple) and head scarves. I’m not a great heel-wearer, so I tend to collect vintage-style midi heels and wedges from charity shops and markets as stores seem to stock only sky-high (I wish!) or flats.  I used to be quite picky in selecting accessories until I realised that a naff scarf/shoe/bracelet which coordinates/contrasts with your outfit will often trump a fab one that doesn’t! So, I pick an accent colour in my frock/top/skirt and accessorise to this colour. As a tip – I’d recommend getting yourself a basket and wearing it as a handbag. I must get stopped at least once a day with a lovely compliment!

What would be your best piece of advice for vintage virgins?
Just go along and have fun with it. Grab anything from the racks that catches your eye and don’t (ever!) look at the size. When I learned that sizes are completely irrelevant in vintage shopping (because there are so many variables like the style, country of origin, the trendiness of snug v loose fit at the time etc etc) it opened a whole new world of choice. I have dresses size 10-20, S-XXL in my wardrobe – so, if it looks like it’ll fit… throw it over your arm and keep going. When you’ve conquered the room, review all your grabs for the final shortlist and pay your respects to the Vintage Gods by hanging your unwanted’s back on the rack (besides, how else will I find my next vintage win?!). Was that 5 tips un-subtly disguised as 1!?

Spring has sprung! Well sorta – you might have to look for the daffodils underneath the frost at the moment. But nonetheless, we’re loving the promise of warmer weather and a new season of events just around the corner. In typical Judy style, there’s only one way to celebrate – hello yellow!

The Vintage Kilo Sale Refashion Challenge – The Winners Unveiled!

Happy February vintage lovers! It’s been a busy few months at Kilo HQ – and the eagled-eyed social media followers amongst you will know why.

At the end of 2015 we ran an exclusive competition with fashion students all over the country to design a new garment from upcycled kilo items, designed to raise awareness of how shopping independent and getting creative can save you a fortune on high street trends.

We were blown away by the effort put into our entries, with designs varying from the conservative-smart to the wacky-colourful. With £200 of sponsorship money and a year’s free entry to the kilo sale up for grabs, we shared the pictures on social media and had a big summit at kilo HQ to decide our winners. Drum roll please…

3rd Place: Auguste Greiciute, Edinburgh College of Arts
Auguste’s entry bagged third prize due to it’s elegant simplicity – this is a look anybody can nail with a needle & thread and a free afternoon.Turning our vibrant kilo blouse into a cute skirt, we think this would look ace with a bardot black top and some killer espadrilles. Congratulations Auguste!

2nd Place: Emilia Elizabeth Erland, Northumbria Uni
Turning a pink midi dress and silk scarf into this gorgeous jumpsuit, we were suitable impressed by the fashion-forward nature of Auguste’s entry. Depicting her finished product from all angles, we can imagine donning this Hareem number with plenty of bangles and some pretty sandals in time for festival season. Good work Emilia!

1st Place: James Reeves, Edinburgh College Of Arts 
Our undisputed winner was Edinburgh’s James Reeves. It’s hard to believe that those trousers and matching-collared shirt were once a maxi dress – upcycling at it’s very best! With a strong finish and well-styled shoot, this ensemble is perfectly in keeping with the retro florals covering our catwalks. Having won both the prize money and a coveted position as our new upcycling expert, expect to see lots more of James’s work soon!

Vintage Street Style At The Kilo Sale

No, we’re not talking Valentine’s just yet – we’re talking street style. It goes without saying that our vintage shoppers know their onions, but we’ve been thoroughly enjoying how effortlessly you spruce up to pop along to our fairs, kilos and fleas. Mannequins are well and truly over – what better inspiration for your next vintage buy than seeing a great look on a real-life walking and talking fashionista?

At our Bristol and Bethnal kilos, we were joined by two lovely photographers (Tegan Woods and Jordan-Jennings O’Toole respectively), who papped till they could pap no more. Hello 2016! – January Vintage Fashion Events For Your Diary

Hello vintage lovers – it’s 2016! Time to ditch the chocolate-fuelled duvet days and get back to work – which for us means organising a new calendar’s worth of fabulous vintage events!

2016 promises to be bigger and better than ever for all three brands – Judy’s Vintage Fair, The Vintage Furniture Flea and The Vintage Kilo Sale. Taking in more dates than ever, more cities and with a few special tricks up our sleeve, it’s a very good year to be a vintage fan.

Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair
With an ethos of affordability, the formula for the fairs is a simple one; gather premiere vintage traders from all over the UK, check them for affordable, eclectic vintage stock and gather them together, if just for a day. 10 years and 30 cities later, affordable vintage fashion remains at the heart at what we do. From 20s beading to 80s brights, 60s shifts to 50s florals, our fairs, markets and kilo sales provide an affordable go-to place for anyone to shop old-world, be ye vintage veteran or not.

The Vintage Kilo Sale

With a fresh new look for 2016, the kilo sale is a mecca for thrifty fans, crafty customisers and street style fanatics. The first and last place to get a whole new wardrobe by weight – just £15 per kilogram, to be exact. Founded in 2009 in conjunction with Europe’s largest wholesaler Glass Onion, we pitch up at eclectic venues all over the country, bringing with us up to five tonnes of vintage and retro clothing from the 1960s-1990s. Rummage our tubs and rails, try items on, and think outside the box – you never know what you might fall in love with.
