Couple-proofing your vintage home

IMG_4410Desperate to create the perfect vintage home but facing some resistance from a very millenial partner? Taken from Issue 5 of Judy’s Affordable Vintage Digest, Catherine McCourt of trader Lace and Liquor Vintage gives us her top tips for creating a wonderful home that appeals to both modern and vintage tastes…

Interiors are seriously important to me, probably on par – if not even more so – than with fashion or clothing. I’ve always had quite a particular style which has matured with age, and moving into our new home and knowing it would be ours, I had an exact idea in mind for how I’d like it to look and spent a few months beforehand thinking it all out. I knew I wanted to go for a 1950s meets scandinavian style with white walls, wooden floors, copper accents and lots of teak. The idea of having a home with a feature wallpapered wall and colour co-ordinated furniture brings me out in a bit of a rash; it’s nice for the majority of the population, but not something I’d ever have myself.

However, it’s not exactly all my house. I do have a boyfriend to think of whose style is pretty far away from mine. When we were painting the new home he told me if he had his own place he’d paint two walls white and two black, apparently that makes a room look bigger. He’s incredibly minimalist too, a sofa, chair, tv and xbox would do him. So trying to create an inviting, comfortable and stylish home with more than one person in mind can be a bit of a challenge, so I thought I’d put out there some of the things I’ve learnt along the way.

Talk Through Everything:

Like most people, Pinterest was my best friend when I was moving and looking for inspiration for my vintage home. It’s on there I saw a few items of furniture I loved the look of and tried to recreate myself. This can be especially handy as it’s great to see what items will look good together rather than just saying “Do you like this table?” “How about these chairs?” without really being able to see how they’re going to look. By showing him the pictures I knew he was happy with the style we’d be going for.

It’s important to talk it through before making any large purchases too, although that sort of goes without saying. It took me quite a while to try to persuade Kane to let me buy one of our new sofas (rather than keeping a hideous beige one that was left in the house, he wanted to keep that because it was so comfortable), but he gave in in the end, as he eventually began to see my point of view. Which leads me on to the next point…

IMG_5118Compromise:

Like most aspects of a relationship, there has to be compromise eventually on a vintage home. Our compromise is that I’ve bought most of the furniture in the house; whether it’s brand new or secondhand, it’s usually me that’s wanted it and me that wants to splash out on new things that aren’t 100% necessary, so I’m okay to pay for it. It means that Kane occasionally pays more of the bills or food shopping to even it all out a bit. Whether it’s letting him add a Marvel poster to the wall or having a little gaming section (surely my boyfriend can’t be the only xbox obsessive) you do need to compromise so it isn’t just your home, it’ll only end in him feeling uncomfortable and unhappy.

Make it Neutral:

When my boyfriend first moved in with me I was only 20 and already had the home, so as you can probably imagine there were lots of pink, florals and bright colours everywhere. He snuggled underneath a vintage crochet blanket on the sofa and went to bed underneath Cath Kidston style bedding, which you can imagine probably isn’t the greatest for a bloke. Whilst the new place isn’t the most masculine, with lots of white, grey and wood, it’s a lot more neutral and is a style that suits us both a lot more.

Get Him Involved:

In the new house we’re making a lot more changes and have changed quite a few of the rooms. So far he’s already laid some new laminate flooring and I’m going to get him to pop in some shelves in a couple rooms. It may only be small but I know it makes him feel a lot more involved and more like he’s contributing to the home too. Equal involvement – the secret to a happy couple!

Crazy for Capes!

Screen Shot 2015-10-21 at 11.35.30Where has this sudden freezing weather come from? Not that we’re complaining – it’s coat season! Sure, we hate having to cover up our favourite frocks and dealing with the constant inside-outside temperature adaption, but there is something about a cosy extra layer that just fills us with joy.

This season, there is one coat that has stolen our heart more than most – the cape, Favoured by everyone from girl-detective Nancy Drew to modern-day fashionista Blair Waldorf of Gossip Girl, there is something about the cape that speaks of whimsy, fun and downright style. They’re notoriously easy to wear – paired with a simple pencil skirt, brogue heels and a good-quality roll neck, you’re set for some serious sleuthing – magnifying glass optional.

Naturally, Vintage is best – check out this beautiful welsh woollen number that our fair manager Emily picked up from on our our traders! Welsh wool is synonymous with vintage capes – look out for he more unusual colourways and a hole-free lining to make sure you’ll stay toasty.

Feeling the cape trend? Pop along to one of our winter fairs and you might just get lucky! Until then, feast your eyes on our cape moodboard to get you in the spirit…

Judy turns 10…and we want YOU to party with us!

mad-men-party-flickr_725x377-1365199482

A lot can happen in ten years. It can be the difference between childhood and adulthood, between a start-up business and an established one, even the difference between what is considered vintage and what isn’t!

One thing hasn’t changed in the ten years of Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair – we still absolutely love what we do. Vintage runs through our veins (along with gin and cake) and we simply wouldn’t have it any other way than to share our passion with so many of you fabulous people, right across the country. Which is why we want YOU to be part of our decade celebrations!

It is our fans who have put us where we are, and to show our gratitude, we are giving away 10 FREE TICKETS (and a plus one each) to our exclusive 10th birthday party, taking place at an incredible London location on the 6th November. Expect goodie bags, canapés, amazing cake and LOTS of dancing – we can’t wait!

In the spirit of celebration, we’re not asking anything to enter – no grand gestures, no bribes, just a simple ‘like’ and a comment on our facebook page. Keep your peepers peeled for the link – we will be picking our winners at random to be as fair as possible.

We can’t wait to party with you! Of course, you’ll need a great outfit – why not pop down to one of our next few events?

Record Breakers!

12068808_1143039205708926_2960532416107081735_oWe don’t like to brag at Judy’s HQ, but we do believe in sharing good news! After a long (not so hot) summer, we threw ourselves back into fair season with a bang, throwing up some of our best ever events across the fair, flea and kilo.

First up was the Furniture Flea in Bethnal Green, with a whopping 2500 through the door! You came and shopped in your droves, picking up all manner of retro cushions, lamps and furniture to help give your homes that desirable autumn glow. No better time of year to decorate if you ask us!

12087041_1143041239042056_6956329713377597568_o Next was the Bristol Kilo, which was positively heaving with new freshers picking up a whole semester’s worth of threads. Due to a completely unexpected turnout we did have some queuing to allow everyone to shop in safety and comfort within the relatively small Bristol Paintworks, but would like to thank all of our customers for being mega patient with us – well over 1700 of you left with bulging bags and smiling faces!

12113382_1143041509042029_2290271892363468734_oLastly was our almighty flagship, Judy’s Vintage Fair. We were expecting a great day when we returned to Bethnal Green, but what we weren’t expecting was 2700 of you!!! We also had a stonker of a day in Manchester – check out some shots in this post courtesy of the lovely Alan A Andrew photography (more available here)

Phew, it’s time for a lie down! We want to offer a great big thankyou and a virtual slab of cake to every single one of for coming out – what a way to celebrate our tenth year! If you’d like to join in the fun, here is a list of our upcoming events this October and November.

Retro Inspiration from London Fashion Week SS16

We’d be a little hypocritical at Judy HQ if our personal wardrobes weren’t at least 90% vintage, but we’re sure we’re not alone in getting a wee bit excited everytime LondonFashion Week rolls around. A veritable whos-who of front-rowers, the street style, the soundtracks and wacky hair and makeup…we love it all! While we were not lucky enough to attend London Fashion Week ourselves this year, we did enjoy picking our favourite retro-inspired styles out on the Vogue website. Tres chic…

orla kiely ss16Orla Kiely
Kilo Manager Jenessa is a huge fan of Orla Kiely and her 60s-inspired floral prints, so it was no surprise to find her coveting almost everything from the collection! Set amongst a crazy golf scene, purple pastels held their own against vibrant yellows and of course, THAT clarks footwear collaboration. We best get saving our pennies…

holly fulton ss16Holly Fulton
Feeling more seventies? Studio Fulton is your place to be. We loved the autumn-pallette-meets-summer-shapes that makes this collection so wearable all year round. Catch us in that flare and blouse combo…or maybe a statement dress or two…we can’t decide!

jeremy scott moschino ss16

Jeremy Scott
Lead designer at Moschino, Jeremy Scott has been a kitsch favourite for a while. This season, he took things to the 80s height of Barbie once more, contrasting with edgy prints and neon colours. Not for the faint-hearted, but those electric blue boots have our heart.

mansur gavriel 2Mansur Gavriel
The colours, the prints, the super-cool models…we’re in love with everything about this Italian accessory designers collection. While the emphasis was on the shoes and bags, we can’t help but wish they’d whip up those pinafores for consumer sale as well…we want every colour!

Feeling inspired to grab some fashion-forward garments for your wardrobe? We’ve got a vast calendar of kilo sales and fashion fairs to get you kitted out in the sort of retrowear that will be influencing the catwalks for years to come. Let’s face it, vintage never goes out of style! Check our events tab for more information.

AW15 Vintage Essentials

Autumn is here – are we the only ones who are sneakily a bit pleased? We love summer as much as the next person, but there’s something about layers and snuggly fabrics that get us a little bit excited. Plus of course, autumn marks the return of fair, flea AND kilo season – result!

When it comes to decking out your wardrobe for AW15, it can be easy to get swept up in new trends you’ll only wear once or rely on tatty favourites that are falling apart at the seams. Wearing vintage is all about quality and finding style over fad trends, which is why it’s such a great investment for colder months. To avoid a room full of clobber or regret purchases, here is our checklist of the key items to look out for at our upcoming events –

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.27.08Warm Coat
A good coat is a winter essential. While a Princess or Pea shape might be desirable for formal events, we recommend a strong sheepskin or faux fur/fur trimmedpiece of outerwear for true warmth that will last you seasons to come. If you’re partial to a trend, look out for a leather or suede trench – these can also be deceptively cosy if layered well with a good knit.

Pussybow BlousePussybow Blouse
The pussybow is a classic vintage style – dress up with a smart skirt or down under dungarees or a pinafore. Bonus points for busy patterns and prints – the more fun the better!

Check Skirt

Tartan or Woolen Skirt
You simply can’t go wrong with a good tartan or check print skirt – look out for wool or thick woven fabrics to keep yourself cosy. These look great with blouses, tightly fitted jumpers and brogues.

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.01.15Statement Jumper
Speaking of jumpers, we love a statement sweater! These always room in a wardrobe for a few plain numbers, but we’re a fan of the quirkier prints…just remember to keep an eye out for those bobbles!

Doc Martens

Brogues or Doc Martens
We at Judy’s love a good heel or mule, but there’s nothing worse than cold feet in the autumn. Spare yourself the heartache by investing in a sturdy pair of brogues or doc martens – they may take some wearing in but will keep out any adverse weather with ease. Even better – they go with everything!

Skirt SuitSkirt Suit
For days where you want to look effortlessly retro, a good skirt suit can save you plenty of dressing-up time in the morning. Wear yours with a simple plain top underneath instead of a blouse – it will stop things looking too formal. Keep an open mind when shopping for your skirt suit – some simple and affordable tailoring can turn a great fabric into a showstopper.

Sturdy luggage

Versatile Handbag or Case
for travel, for the office, for sneaky shopping trips…a good-sized bag is an essential. We love doctor, trunk and hardcase styles, but feel free to experiment – as long as it’s big enough to fit the kitchen sink, it’s probably a keeper!

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.32.35Coloured and thick knit tights
Available from very low prices and in a multitide of patterns and finishes, a good set of tights can elevate a plain outfit. Opt for ones with plenty of stretch and be sure to follow the proper washing instructions – nobody likes baggy elastic!Emily Party Dress

Party Dress
The pièce de résistance of any Autumn Winter wardrobe, the party dress is a must. For Halloween, Christmas and New Years, you need sparkles, embellishments and most of all, a good fit. Our events offer a multitude of opportunities to pick up your sartorial soulmate – just check out fair manager Emily in her array of Judy’s festive frocks!

Fancy doing some shopping? Check out our ‘events’ tab here for a fair, flea or kilo near you!

Postcards from Festival Number 6

Festival season is over – boo hoo! We can’t believe we’re already packing away our tents for another year, but what a summer it has been! We’ve loved every second of meeting our customers in muddy fields, dancing at sunset and donning as much glitter as humanly possible – it’s a hard life eh?

We rounded things off with possible our most picturesque home yet – Portmeirion’s Festival No. 6. Set amongst the beautiful welsh countryside, the sun shone bright (for the most part) and we caught some great bands including one of our absolute inspirations Grace Jones. You didn’t let us down either, picking up some great bargains and sharing a gin or two with us in our marquee.

Until next time, check out some of our festival snaps below…11987108_10207527055878882_8706415151865920732_n

Formica Fancy – The Best in Retro Tables

Maybe it’s the autumn air or the slowly darkening evenings, but we’re feeling very nesty at Judy HQ of late! Tinkering away at your home interiors is a never-ending process with new treasures to be found along the way – both our kilo and fair manager’s have recently moved into new homes and are enjoying the process of decorating their new abodes in vintage glory.

However, if there is one thing your home need for a retro look, it’s a spot of formica. Invited in 1912, the hard-wearing, wipe-clean laminate became hugely popular in home from the 1950s onwards, available in a variety of bright colours. We have our very own legendary red formica in our Judy family – bought from a trader by Judy herself and passed down to Kilo Manager Jenessa, we think it looks just perfect in her new flat!

Feeling the formica love for yourself? Hot foot it down to one of our vintage fairs or furniture fleas – our traders regularly have a rainbow of cool colours for you to choose from. You can view all upcoming dates here. And don’t just stick to tables either – formica can be found in great clocks, worktops and chairs. Check out our inspiration board below!
